At just 16 years old, Catherine Kennedy broke new ground in Southern Appalachian whitewater, becoming NOC’s first female raft guide in 1972.
In an industry dominated by men, she opened doors—and then spent decades helping others walk through them.
The daughter of NOC co-founders Payson & Aurelia Kennedy, Cathy carried forward the Kennedy family’s legacy through a lifetime of guiding, leadership, and mentorship.
She went on to become the longest-serving guide in NOC’s history—an unmatched record of dedication to the river, the community, and the people she inspired.
A pioneer. A leader. A mentor. A legend.
